Content Summary:

The lesson will focus on first hand accounts of the battles that occurred in the Pacific Theatre of World War II from 1942 to 1945.  Background information will be provided including Japan’s invasion of Manchuria and continuous expansion into China and the Far Eastern Pacific Islands.  Also discussed will be the negotiations between Japan and the United States over economic sanctions, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and President Roosevelt’s declaration of war against Japan.  Students will learn about the island hopping campaign that was used in the Pacific to gain/take important islands from the Japanese to set up bases for the U.S. and hurt Japan’s defense strategy.  The eventual goal of the United States was the invasion of mainland Japan, but it did not happen because of the atomic bomb being dropped.

Objectives:

Students will:

·         Gain knowledge of the events that led to the United States involvement in the Pacific Theatre of World War II.

·         Evaluate the importance of the island hopping campaign that was implemented by the United States in winning the World War II in the Pacific Theatre.

·         Read and analyze primary and secondary sources that they are given and draw conclusions based on the events seen and discussed in the sources.
